In the years 2002-2003-2004, the activities held in the Botanical Museum were the only ones in the Beja District.

Dom António Vitalino Fernandes Dantas, Bishop of Beja and Dom Manuel António Guerreiro do Rosário, Head of the Seminar of Our Lady of Fátima (Beja) visit the Botanical Museum.

 

May 2007

The Botanical Museum was selected to be included in the book The Wonders of Portugal (As Maravilhas de Portugal), published by Sonae Group.

VIII International Violet Congress

Royal Visit to the Botanical Museum

His Royal Highness the Duke of Braganza and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Braganza visited the Botanical Museum’s collections and signed the visitor’s honor book.

The Dukes presented the awards given during the II International Violet Contest that was included in the VIII International Violet Congress organized by the Botanical Museum.

Nathalie Casbas, the curator of the French National Violet Collection created a new violet cultivar (Viola odorata L. cv. “Duchesse de Braganza”) and gave it to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Braganza, Dona Isabel de Herédia e Braganza.

The Beja Botanical Museum publishes the book O Pinheiro-Wollemi e o Retorno da Fénix ou A Descoberta de um fóssil Vivo da Era dos Dinossáurios. The preface was written by Professor A. M. Galopim de Carvalho, Professor Emeritus of Lisbon University and former Director of the National Museum of Natural History (Lisbon). The braille version has the High Patronage of His Serene Highness the Prince Leopold d’ Arenberg, ambassador in Portugal of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta

 

November 2005

The Museum organizes the I Beja Chocolate Feast.

The former President of Portugal Dr. Mário Soares visits the Museum.

October 2005

The Museum bought a specimen of Wollemi Pine tree (Wollemia nobilis) in the Sotheby’s auction held in Sydney. This purchase was possible with the support of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon)

 

May 2005

The museum gains admittance to the Grupo para a Acessibilidade nos Museus (www.gam.org.pt), a organization that promotes the accessibility to museums.

The French Travel Guide Michelin recommends a visit to the Beja Botanical Museum.

 

November 2004

The Botanical Museum had a pavilion in the most important organic farmer products fair held in Portugal; it represented, simultaneously, the Botanical Museum and the Escola Superior Agrária de Beja.

 

May 30th 2004

The Botanical Museum publishes the braille edition of The Gift of Nile exhibition’s catalogue with the support of the Governo Civil de Beja and the Patronage of His Serene Highness the Prince Leopold d’ Arenberg, ambassador in Portugal of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta.

April 3rd 2004

The Botanical Museum purchases a collection of Egyptian stereoscopic photos made in last years of the XIX century. They show temples, botanical frescos and scenes of Egyptian daily life that had changed little since the times of the pharaohs.

 

November 17th 2003

The book “Portugal Botânico de A a Z” is published. The authors, Luis Mendonça de Carvalho and Francisca Fernandes, are members of the museum staff.

This book is the first of its kind to enter in the Portuguese market. Is has 11.000 names (scientific and vernacular) of plants from Portugal and from former Portuguese colonies. It also has the authors of plants names according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.

The preface was written by two eminent botanists: Professor Vernoon Heywood, Emeritus Professor of the University of Reading (UK) and Professor David Mabberley, Professor of Leiden University and researcher at the Royal Botanic Gardens (Sydney, Australia).
